DCoE Introduces the Executive Level Overview of Psychological Health and Traumatic Brain Injury in the Defense Department (Deskside Briefing)
The Defense Centers of Excellence for Psychological Health and Traumatic Brain Injury (DCoE) released its newest education product, the “Executive Level Overview of Psychological Health and Traumatic Brain Injury in the Defense Department,” also known as the Deskside Briefing.Intended for military and civilian leadership, the Deskside Briefing for psychological health and traumatic brain injury (TBI) highlights the need to:
-
Increase awareness of leadership’s specific role in identifying and managing individuals for TBI and psychological health conditions
-
Help combat psychological health stigma among service members and line leaders in the military
-
Understand treatments and initiatives to improve care for psychological health and TBI
The Deskside Briefing is an informative slide deck that provides a baseline understanding of psychological health and TBI issues, specifically as they relate to the state of care within the Defense Department. Topics addressed in the Deskside Briefing include:
-
Key facts on TBI, psychological health and the impact of these conditions to the military
-
Overview of psychological health and TBI monitoring, management and/or reporting
-
Defense Department initiatives and progress addressing psychological health and TBI concerns in the military community
-
Resources and links to additional information on psychological health or TBI
For example, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is an example of a psychological health condition that affects many service members. Among other reasons, service members often times do not seek care or treatment due to the perceived stigma associated with reaching out for help. PTSD, if unaddressed, can result in suicide, substance abuse, professional misconduct and spousal or child abuse. The Deskside Briefing highlights resources available to assist leadership in combating this and other challenges facing our wounded warriors.
Electronic versions of the Deskside Briefing for psychological health and TBI are available on the DCoE website in the Leadership Training Resources section. Additional educational resources and information pertaining to psychological health and TBI in the military are available by contacting the DCoE Outreach Center at 866-966-1020.
