Physical Evaluation Board (PEB) Print E-mail
Saturday, 19 January 2008

The next step is an informal Physical Evaluation Board (PEB).  As with the MEB, it is not a meeting but an exchange of assessments between an active duty Colonel or Lieutenant Colonel (PEB Chair), a Personnel Management Officer, and a physician to determine whether or not the Wounded Warrior meets retention requirements for his or her MOS.  Under the new scheme being piloted at Walter Reed the VA office located at Walter Reed simultaneously evaluates the case and determines the VA percent disability rating and sends it to the PEB.  The PEBLO briefs the WW on the results.

There is no separate "Army disability rating."  Still unresolved is the issue of determining whether the WW would receive a severance amount or pension if medically retired.  Various groups are working that issue now.  It is complex because services all must agree on criteria, with uniformity between old ratings and the new ones.

The WW has 10 days to concur/non-concur with the informal PEB determination.  Those who non-concur may request a formal PEB for which they may submit additional documentation and appear before the board to make an oral presentation.  A JAG counsel is appointed to support the Wounded Warrior during the formal PEB.

Organizations within the relevant Service Department review and approve all PEB determinations.

Wounded Warriors found not to meet retention standards for their MOS, may request to remain on active duty through the Continuation on Active Duty (COAD) (Sam: link to COAD page) process, which may result in an MOS change and retention.
