THE MILITARY TO MEDICINE PROGRAM

On May 1 2010 the Inova Healthcare System located in northern Virginia developed and imitated a new Military to Medicine (M2M) Program. The Program was designed for primarily for  military spouses, caregivers, Wounded Warriors, Veterans, National Guard  and Reservists as well as transitioning service members. who want to pursue a medical career. the program consists of all on line courses and is particularly suited for military spouses, Wounded Warriors and transitioning military personnel including National Guard and Reserve personnel. The program is advertised at low or no cost to the participant although there are tuition costs associated with courses listed in the M2m spring 2010 catalogue.

The M2M Program for each individual consists of:

 

1. Workforce Pre-requisites for Training and Placements   Estimated time to complete is 3 months

 

            a. Online Training Skills Assessment- Assessment of computer skills required for 

                 online class work or the workplace

             b. WorkKeys Personal Skills Assessment (Talent and Fit)

             c. WIN-Provides for basic workplace skills based on the Workkey assessment

                 System

             d. Practice Workkeys and foundational Workkeys Assessments that measures 

                 real-world skills that employers believe are critical to job success.  Related to                 healthcare they include foundation assessmentsof applied mathmatics, locating                  information and reading for information. 

 

 

2. At the completion of the above courses, the student will take a test for the National Career Readiness Certificate.  The achievement of this Certificate verifies to any employer that an individual possesses the essential core skills of reading, math and locating information essential to jobs in the workplace. 

 

 

3.  Essential Health Career Courses

            a. Introduction to Healthcare Courses (4 hours)

             b. Medical Terminology (8 weeks)

             c. Medical Records and Health Information (16 weeks)

             d. Front Office Medical Assistant (16 weeks)

 

 

4. Career Pathway Specific Core Courses (See Catalog)

 

 

Courses will be offered from online sites around the country and a student advisor will be provided for each student particularly during the initial training and assessment phases.

 

For the original Inova Healthcare Program whereby WW’s and their spouses could get a job at a Inova Hospital in the northern Virginia area at  lower level related to the medical area of interest while pursuing a career as a Nurse, Doctors Physical Assistant, nurse Practitioner,  Pharmacist, Nutritionist, Occupational or Physical Therapist, X-Ray Technologist, IT Medical Systems Specialist, that program remains in effect. Applicants will have a paid job while attending the medical profession of their choice with the schooling being paid by the post 9/11 GI Bill of the VA Voc Rehab Program.  However all new applicants must apply to the M2M Program and complete above-mentioned  Phases 1 and 2 .  After completion of Phases 1 and 2,  applicants will be managed directly by the Inova HR office and be offered a job at a lower level for the medical certificate or career path chosen.  Applicants will have a paid job while going to medical training under the post 0/11 GI Bill or the VA Voc Rehab Program.
