Long Range Education Counselor Available
Priscilla Hardiman, a WWMP volunteer and long range education counselor, will be available to counsel WW's by appointment 9:00 to 3:30 hours on Mondays in the Ed Center, Room 3-08, Delano Hall (Bldg 11) beginning Jan 26 and each Monday thereafter. Her PH at the office is 202-356-1012, Ext 20425.
The education process for WW's is for them to be assessed by the WW Transition Brigade and referred to the Education Center Counselors in Rm 3-11 of Delano Hall for near term education assistance while at WR using the Tuition Assistance (TA) Program (On line Courses, Courses offered at WR by Montgomery College and University of MD University College and courses at local colleges). The WW's have $4,500 per fiscal year available for this purpose that does not count against their GI Bill and Veterans benefits. This process should include outpatient aptitude testing and counseling by the VA representative- Jeannie Lehowicz (703-733-0553) in Rm 2-24 of the MATC (New Amputee Center in the Hospital) to assist the WW on what curricula and new profession to pursue.
Once the above near term education program is underway and the aptitude testing completed, WW's and their wives need to make a long range education decision on the profession they intend to pursue upon discharge from WR. This normally involves selecting a college and professional school as well as selecting a curricula to pursue. This is where mentors need to refer their WW's and wives to the long range education counselor- Priscilla Hardiman. She will work one on one with the WW to select a college or professional school and assist in their application process while at WR. The selection process also involves maximizing the educational benefits available to the WW. upon discharge from the WR. These are the existing MGI Bill, the New GI bill to become effective Aug 1 of 09 and the VA Vocational Rehabilitation Program (if 20% VA disabled or more). Granted nothing can be officially done until the WW receives his/her DD 214 upon leaving WR and discharge but the WW can report to the VA upon discharge with a firm plan and perhaps preacceptance into the long range program. In addition the WW will have already completed the aptitude testing an counseling required by the VA. This saves the WW valuable time in that he/she will not have to wait for the three to six months for the VA to process the WW into their VA education programs. As a logical flow of this counseling, Priscilla will be working closely with Jeannie Lehowicz for the results of the aptitude testing and counseling and the recommendations of the near term educational counselors in Room 3-11 Delano Hall to insure continuity of the effort.
Priscilla Hardiman is the wife of Bob Hardiman, '61, a mentor in our program. She comes to this volunteer position, well qualified as a top experienced educator from the Fairfax County Educational System. She is looking forward to working one on one with our WW's, their wives and our mentors, We welcome her with open arms to assist us with WW's and their wives for their long range education needs leading to a new productive life and profession. For all mentors, please stop by to welcome Priscilla and to discuss the long range educational needs of your Wounded Warrior with her.
