Computer/Electronic Accommodations Program (CAP) News

WWMP NOTE:  CAP is the Computer/Electronic Accommodations Program (CAP) and provides assistive technology and services to people with disabilities, Federal managers, supervisors, and IT professionals. CAP increases access to information and works to remove barriers to employment opportunities by eliminating the costs of assistive technology and accommodation solutions.  We have a CAP office at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. That office has provided many of our Wounded Warriors with free computer/electronic devices to assist the WWs’ with their disabilities.

DoD Instruction 6025.22, Assistive Technology for Wounded Service Members 

On August 14, 2008 the Honorable Dr. Chu, Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness signed the DoD Instruction 6025.22, Assistive Technology for Wounded Service Members.  This is a new achievement for CAP and for Wounded Service Members.  The instruction, which is the outcome of Public Law 109-364, defines terms, assigns responsibilities, and establishes procedures for implementing assistive technology (AT) programs within Military Medical Treatment Facilities (MTFs).

This allows for an independent AT system between CAP and the Military Medical Treatment Facilities (MTFs) which will improve the delivery and the quality of rehabilitative services to Wounded Service Members.  The complete instruction can be found online at: http://www.dtic.mil/whs/directives/corres/pdf/602522p.pdf.

CAP's Wounded Service Members (WSM) team will provide training opportunities for MTF personnel, including training provided via webinars, in early FY 2009.  This training will offer specific procedures and best practices to establish an effective assistive technology delivery program for Wounded Service Members in all MTFs.
