Benefits for Veterans With Service-Connected Disabilities

(Separate from Vocational Rehabilitation)

Eligibility

  • At least 10% service-related disability
  • Discharged under other than dishonorable conditions

 

Benefits

  •  Monthly payment of $117/mo to $3,000/mo depending on level of disability and number of dependents  
      o  
    Tax free

      o  
    Independent of Social Security disability compensation
  • Traumatic Serviceman’s Group Life Insurance (TSGLI)
      o 
    One time payment of $25,000 to $100,000 depending on level of injury

              e.g., loss of hearing in one ear to loss of eyesight
     
      o 
    WW must have been making monthly SGLI payment

      o 
    Payable only to service member if competent   

      o 
    Tax free
  • Service-Disabled Veterans Life Insuranceo   $10,000 to $20,000 coverage depending on level of disability
      o 
    Premium may be waived in some cases
  • Dependents education financial assistance
      o 
    Available for dependents of WW who is permanently and totally disabled due to service connected disability 

Preparation

  • Maintain copy of all medical, hospital and VA assessment records
  • Get copies of dependent records
  • Marriage certificate
  • Children’s birth certificates
  • Establish saving/investment plan
  • Be prepared for periodic VA reassessment of disability rating
