Montgomery GI Bill

Eligibility 

·     Entered active duty after 6/30/1985

·     Had military pay reduced by $100/month for first 12 months of service

·     Continuously served for 3 years or 2 years if that is what enlisted for (benefits are lower)

·     Have a high school diploma or GED

·     Honorable Discharge 

Benefits 

·     From $1,426/mo for full time (starting 1 Oct 2010), down in increments to $357/mo for ¼ time or less at academic institution (tax free)

o Lower rates for apprenticeship or OJT

·     Buy-Up provision – eligible service member can contribute $600 before separation and collect an additional $150/mo (total additional $5,400)

·     Up to 36 months of full time equivalent education

o May be eligible for an additional 12 months under the Post 9/11 GI Bill

·     Time to use – 10 years

·     Transferability to a dependent o Pilot program in the Army – MOS and reenlistment conditions Preparation
